TED Talks: Rory Sutherland: Life lessons from an ad man

Advertising adds value to a product by changing our perception, rather than the product itself. Rory Sutherland makes the daring assertion that a change in perceived value can be just as satisfying as what we consider “real” value — and his conclusion has interesting consequences for how we look at life.

from IDEO’s Patterns website:

Enabling the individual enables the community.

Sounds counterintuitive, right? In reality, powerful individualism is often what leads to strong communities. Many of the most successful communities are created when people are empowered to take ownership and have a voice.

As we strive to move away from cookie-cutter sameness, individuals’ opinions, points of view, or unique thoughts can spark connection. We see it across all types of communities, whether grassroots or corporate-sponsored, virtual or rooted in physical space. The more eclectic and interesting, the more it thrives. Funny how an emphasis on “I” leads to a more coherent sense of we.

I’m really excited to be leading the effort again for the next interation of Twestival here in New York City.  This time Twestival is supporting local charities around the world and in New York we will be supporting a non-profit that is very dear to me, CampInteractive.  We’re aiming to make some pretty big announcements very soon, regarding our event, which is scheduled for September 12th.

Statistics Show Social Media Is Bigger Than You Think

There’s some debate over on Socialnomics as to whether the stats in this video are accurate, but for me those that argue the sematics are missing the point.  The overall sentiment is spot on.  We’re experiencing the communications revolution of our time and social media is having and will continue to have a major impact on society and culture.

Back to the Future: Eclectic Method Mix

Back to the Future was one of my favorite films when I was a kid, so for me this Eclectic Method Mix was like an acid trip down memory lane.
